Series shows how to create art from recycled items

PORTLAND, Ore. – A non-credit Portland Community College series will teach students how to be creative with recycled items thanks to the award-winning Portland ReBuilding Center.

In the series, Recycled Art with PCC and the ReBuilding Center, students can learn from expert salvagers the most creative recycling practices. Each workshop will be held at the ReBuilding Center, located at 3625 N. Mississippi Ave.

Mosaic Making Using Recycled Tiles: John Wenderoth will guide students through the basics of mosiac making and create a project during class. Possibilities include mosaic panels, stepping stones or decorative sculptural pieces. Class meets from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 27; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 30; and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4. Cost is $79.

Make a Table from a Door: Dan Anderson will show how to create a new use from an everyday object. Starting with a residential door and reclaimed lumber, students will use only a hand tool to make a table of unique size and dimension. The class will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 7 and Sunday, Oct. 4. Cost is $94.

Wall Hung Curio Cabinet: Gideon Hughes will help students select an interesting door from the ReBuilding Center’s vast assortment and build a box to fit. Learn basic box construction, door hanging and how to dress up the creation with moldings and embellishments. The workshop will meet from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 18, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21. Cost is $70.

Toy Making with Salvaged Materials: Design and construct a one of a kind toy with John Wenderoth. Projects might range from building block sets to wire toys with moving parts. The class will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday Nov. 11 and Sunday, Nov. 12. Cost is $79.
