Photos and Story by

The Volunteer Literacy Tutoring program at PCC recently received a grant award from ProLiteracy America, a national literacy professional organization, to participate in a project entitled “Volunteers in ABS.” The purpose of the project is to identify promising practices of volunteer management in ABS programs around the country.

The PCC program is one of eight nationwide to be awarded a total of $3,000 during a two year period. The programs selected will serve as model programs using volunteers in the delivery of instruction in Adult Basic Skills programs with a special emphasis on low-level ESL students.

The VLT program will provide data and expertise to help create models for new literacy pilot programs. The selected programs will also have the opportunity to participate in a nationwide research project that will enhance the field of Adult Basic Skills instruction.
