The Portland Community College Grants Office has announced an award of $234,453 from the Oregon Department of Community Colleges and Workforce Development for the college’s career pathways efforts.

This 18-month federal grant will fund the development of two pre-college courses designed to expose students to the healthcare and advanced manufacturing industries while working to improve their math, reading and writing skills. This will involve staff from PCC’s Career Pathways, Adult Basic Skills, Customized and Workplace Training and the college’s Workforce Development departments. Funds will also be used to support implementation of the college’s Career Pathways Action Plan and PAVTEC program enhancements.

“This grant allows us the opportunity to improve K-12 and community college partnerships around Career Pathways,” said Pamela Murray, dean of the Workforce and Economic Development Division at PCC. “And it provides us with the means to develop exciting new pre-college courses designed to assist individuals in quickly obtaining the basic skills they need to be successful in advanced manufacturing and health care career and technical education programs at the college.”

The project will strengthen the college’s collaboration on Career Pathways initiatives with local high school partners, which PAVTEC will take the lead. PAVTEC is a tech prep consortium composed of all of the K-12 school districts that are within the PCC district boundary, including PCC, Portland State University, Oregon Institute of Technology, the Business-Education Compact, Oregon Building Congress/Associated General Contractors, Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce, and more. PCC is the managing entity and fiscal agent.
