Summer Arts Institute a chance to get creative

It can be fun or a chance to earn college credit. No matter how people use the Summer Arts Institute at Portland Community College, it will be an important tool for students to get creative.
More than 20 credit classes will be offered through the institute, taught by local instructors and artists. Classes will be held through most of the summer term, which starts Monday, June 23, at the Sylvania Campus (12000 S.W. 49th Ave.).
All of the courses offered through the institute span the reaches of the creative imagination. Courses range from drawing, digital photography and painting to ceramics, history of Western art and love-letter writing, to name a few. The offerings are perfect for: PCC students wanting to fulfill core credit requirements; non-PCC and graduating high school students needing to earn college credit; and people in the community looking to just have a little fun this summer.
A sampling includes:
Mask Making Workshop – Learn the methods of mask creation from artist Diane Trapp. Using papier-mâché methods, students learn to transform masks and sculpted forms into works of self-expression suggested by literary figures or inspired by their own imagination. 10 a.m.-1:50 p.m., Monday-Friday, July 7-11, Performing Arts Center.
Ancient Art of Bronze Casting – This is a fast-paced introduction to the ancient art of bronze casting. From hand-carved original to final polish, the class will include modeling with wax, a 24-hour wax burnout, melting and pouring bronze, chasing and patinas.
6-8:50 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday, June 24 through July 12, Room 133, CT Building.
X-treme Musical Theater – An intense course focused on the creation of a musical theater production during a two-week period. Course will conclude with final public production. 11 a.m.-12:50 p.m., Monday-Friday, July 7-21, Room 201, CT Building.
Introduction to Stand-Up Comedy – A workshop to explore the elements of humor with a focus on stand-up comedy. Students will develop material, and observe and critique routines. 6-7:50 p.m., Monday/Wednesday, July 7-21, Room 201, CT Building.
