Instructor wins Art Educator of the Year

Art instructor Mark Andres was named Oregon Higher Education Art Educator of the Year by the Oregon Art Education Association. Andres has worked for 17 years at the college and is based at the Rock Creek Campus in Washington County.
“This award is a great honor for me because of the many fine and dedicated art educators I have met who work in Oregon,” Andres said. “I am proud to represent them and to stand in their company.”
Andres grew up in Maine, the son of illustrator Charles J. Andres. He was educated at Williams College, The Art Institute of Boston, and the University of Massachusetts (Amherst). He is the recipient of several grants and awards, including a Massachusetts Artist’s Foundation Fellowship, an Oregon Literary Arts Grant and a PCC/U.S. Bancorp Award for Excellence in Teaching.
His work has been exhibited at The Judi Rotenberg Gallery (Boston), The Tacoma Art Museum, The Bowery Gallery (New York), the Lyman-Eyer Gallery (Provincetown, Mass.) and the Alysia Duckler Gallery (Portland). He has taught at The Pacific Northwest College of Art, The Oregon College of Art and Craft, and since 1991 has been on the faculty of Portland Community College, where he currently serves as art department chair. His work is on display in numerous public and private collections, including Oregon Health & Science University, The Visual Chronicle of Portland, PCC and the Hallie Ford Museum.
The Oregon Art Education Association is a not-for-profit organization with a volunteer board of art educators from around the state of Oregon. Its mission is to advocate for the advancement and expansion of quality visual arts education.
