Cascade lets historic sorority use its space

Photos and Story by

The Cascade Campus strengthened its ties recently with another longtime North Portland organization, the Portland Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. The campus has formally agreed to allow the sorority to use its parking lot to accommodate excess vehicles on evenings when the June Key Center hosts community events. The center, at the corner of North Ainsworth Street and Albina Avenue, is the new headquarters for the sorority.

“We are happy to be able to help the Deltas with the important work they do for the people of this community,” said Algie Gatewood, president of Cascade Campus. “Many spaces in our lot go unused during the evenings, so this arrangement is a win-win for everyone.”

The Portland Alumnae Chapter, founded in 1945, is active in a number of community service, outreach, and charitable programs in the area, including the awarding of annual undergraduate scholarships. The completion of the June Key Center, along with the chapter’s new partnership with Cascade Campus, will give it a home base from which to conduct its operations, hold meetings, and host events.
