PCC-Cascade exhibit features videos as art

Photos and Story by

Portland Community College’s Cascade Art Gallery will feature the work of Julie Perini in the art exhibit, “All Julie All the Time.”

The exhibition of videos and photographs will run from Nov. 19 through Dec. 31. The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. There will be a site specific banquet performed by the artist from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at the gallery and an artist’s talk from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 10, Room 223, Moriarty Arts and Humanities Building, Cascade Campus, 705 N. Killingsworth. The Cascade Art Gallery is located in Room 102, Terrell Hall.

“I am not content, however, to make videos only for myself, as much fun as that can be,” said Perini. “How I make a video or performance, who I make it with, and who I make it for, are issues as important to me as the lighting, color and camera angle. Much of my work involves other people as subjects, participants, co-conspirators, actors and players, and often the audience is carefully considered as well. It is not just the artwork itself that can connect people to one another and to me; the process of making an artwork can, too.”

Her video art will be on display at the Northwest Film & Video Festival at the NW Film Center/Portland Art Museum and the Olympia Film Festival in the coming months. She has shown her work at the Rochester Contemporary Art Center, Rochester, N.Y.; Echo Park Film Center, Los Angeles, Calif.; and the Newspace Center for Photography, Portland.

Perini is an intermedia instructor at the Pacific Northwest College of Art and is an assistant professor of art with Western Oregon University. She also has taught at State University of New York at Buffalo before coming to Portland. She has a master’s degree in fine arts from the University of Buffalo and a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University. She also studied abroad at Scuola Lorenzo di’Medici in Florence, Italy.
