Local high school students get fired up about careers, PCC programs

Photos and Story by

Portland Community College students, left to right, Amanuel Ocbaslassie of Northeast Portland and Alfredo Rivera of Hillsboro show off a fuel injection system to a group of on-looking high school students. The two second-year Diesel Service Technician students were assisting their instructors in showing off what their program has to offer future college students. The injection system shows the high school attendees how it fires up within a diesel engine and propels the valves within the cylinders. This hot demonstration was part of the second annual Career and Technical Opportunities Day on Friday, Nov. 7 at PCC’s Rock Creek Campus. More than 500 high school students and 50 of their teachers from Beaverton, Hillsboro, Portland and Tigard participated in the event, which showcases the college program like Veterinary Technology, Aviation Science, Auto Collision Repair, Microelectronics, Welding, Computer Science, and more. The programs put on interactive workshops to help the students see some of the options they have as they head toward high school graduation and college.
