Northwest printmaking exhibit to open at Washington County Museum

Photos and Story by

Washington County Historical Society and Museum has an exciting new exhibit, “The Art of Contemporary Printmaking," which will open on Dec. 10 in the Museum’s Collins Gallery. The exhibit, in partnership with Print Arts Northwest, will feature the Founders’ Portfolio, and include a holiday art sale. The Founder’s Portfolio is a collection of 17 original hand pulled prints by the Founding Members and included Charter Members of the Northwest Print Council.

The exhibit highlights a range of media, printmaking techniques and documents of significant premier printmakers of the region including Gordon Gilkey. He was also the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Oregon State University, taught printmaking at Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) and established the Vivian and Gordon Gilkey Center for the Graphic Arts at the Portland Art Museum. Gilkey’s influence in the world of art and printmaking cannot be overstated.

The museum will also show a new collection in the Collectors Cabinet. Longstanding museum member and volunteer Carol Gutmann is exhibiting her collection of 19th and 20th Century Historic Bottles. The collection can be found in the Museum Collectors Cabinet through Dec 31. The showcase includes liquor bottles, bitters, cures, toiletries, cosmetics, food and canning jars. There is even a bottle for embalming fluid and a fun variety of soda bottles.

The Washington County Museum is located on the Rock Creek Campus. The Museum is open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays, except major holidays.
