PCC forums focus on economic news and impact on the college

President Pulliams and Wing-Kit Chung, vice president for financial affairs, spoke to more than 50 people this morning at Cascade Campus. The topic: the impact of the crummy economic news out of Salem and Washington, D.C., and how it will affect Portland Community College.
They gave a worst-case scenario that showed the college losing $11 million in the first year of the 2009-11 biennium, and $9 million in the second year. That’s out of a budget of about $155 million. It would be a big hit.
Now, that’s all guess work. We don’t know how the federal stimulus package helps us yet. We don’t know if the Oregon Legislature is going to dip into the rainy-day fund it established in 2007. We don’t know if President Obama’s various economic strategies will kick-start the economy.
Again: that was a worst-case scenario. It could be much less draconian.
