Gov. Kulongoski coming to PCC

Photos and Story by

Things are moving apace for Gov. Ted Kulongoski’s visit to Portland Community College’s Sylvania Campus on Thursday.

He’ll be here to unveil his new advisory committee on the environment. The event, which is open to the public, runs from 10 a.m. to noon in Conference Rooms A and B in the President’s Wing. Seating is limited.

There are, like, 13 trillion details that have to be ironed out. Security, food, coffee, PowerPoint presentations, nametags, parking, telephones that can handle conference calls, the shape of the room, where to put the microphones, ad nauseam. It’s all getting to look like the stateroom scene from “Night at the Opera.” (Oh, please. Tell me you’ve seen that 1935 movie. It’s on youtube.com. Go.)

It’ll all work out. And it’s great, because PCC is positioning itself to be the educational leader in so-called “green collar” job training for the entire Northwest. Whether it’s environmentally friendly construction or training mechanics for hybrid cars, or solar and wind power. PCC is where the workers of today and tomorrow are going to get into those jobs.

The governor’s staff gets that. That’s why they’re coming here.

Provided I get the coffee and box lunches right.
