Rock Creek Multicultural Coordinator selected to present on race at national conference

After a highly competitive application process, Portland Community College Rock Creek’s Multicultural Center Coordinator Brenda Maldonado, was selected to present at the 2009 National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in American Higher Education from May 25-30 in San Diego.
Maldonado and Dana Murray-Patterson of Wright University will present a 90-minute theoretical model during the conference. The title of their presentation is “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Spoken Word When a PhD is Not Enough: On Using My Afrocentric Voice in a Eurocentric Conversation.”
“I’m excited to get new information that I can bring back to PCC,” Maldonado said.
A second proposal, with her colleague Claire Oliveros, the Multicultural Center Coordinator at the Sylvania Campus, on building leadership and multicultural programs at community colleges, has been selected as an alternate presentation for the conference. It attracts thousands of academicians and students annually and it is the most comprehensive national forum on race and ethnicity issues in American higher education. The conference focuses on creating and sustaining institutional change to improve interethnic relations on campus and expand educational opportunities within underrepresented populations.
