Busy political week in Salem and at Sylvania and Southeast Center

Well, the five days of hearings on the 2009-11 budgets for the community colleges has begun. About a half dozen of us were down in Salem this morning before the Education Subcommittee of Ways and Means – the budget-writing committee in the Legislature.
It’s an incredibly busy week, politically. I can’t go down to tomorrow’s hearing because we’ll have Gov. Ted Kulongoski on the Sylvania Campus from 10 a.m. to noon. He’s here to unveil a new advisory committee focusing on environmental issues.
He’ll also hear a report about using our 2008 bond money, and possibly some federal money, to retrofit Sylvania and make it the greenest campus possible. That’s pretty exciting. Stay tuned; I’ll write more on that later.
Then the Southeast Center campus hosts a town hall from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday, April 2). That’s the campus at Southeast 82nd Avenue and Division. Lawmakers taking part include Sen. Jackie Dingfelder, Rep. Michael Dembrow and Rep. Ben Cannon. I understand that Sen. Richard Devlin, the Senate majority leader, will be there as well. This is a great opportunity to speak to these lawmakers and tell them what’s on your mind.
Finally, it’s back to Salem next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 6 to 8, for more budget hearings. That includes some PCC testimony on Wednesday.
