Student testimony sought as Legislature comes to PCC

The budget-writing committee of the Oregon Legislature is coming to Portland Community College next week, and members of the PCC student government are offering ways to help students who wish to testify.

“I have testified, and it can be terrifying the first time,” said Amber Hastings, Sylvania Campus legislative director for the Associated Students of Portland Community College. “I know a lot of students would like to go and tell their stories. We can help make their testimony less frightening, more fun, and help them find the exact right message.”

The budget-writing Ways and Means Committee is coming to Portland to hear from Oregonians about the economy and the recession. The hearing is set for 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, in the Moriarty Auditorium, Cascade Campus, 705 N. Killingsworth St.

“This is a great opportunity for student leaders to affect PCC,” said Dana Haynes, public affairs manager for the college. “We’re looking for students who have been laid off during this recession and who have turned to PCC for help. That’s a message the lawmakers really need to hear.”

To sign up to speak Tuesday, contact Haynes at dana.haynes@pcc.edu. For help with written or oral testimony, contact Hastings at amber.hastings@pcc.edu or (503) 977-4946.
