Capital construction is next big battle in Salem

Photos and Story by

We still don’t know where our budget is going to fall, but starting next week, we have another doozy of a battle ahead of us.

We’re asking the Legislature to help pay for a Center for Careers in Education at the Cascade Campus.

Basically, what we’re seeking is a matching grant for this building. And the reason we’re somewhat confident of getting the grant is: We have the matching money in hand, thanks to the 2008 bond measure.

The center would help train instructional assistants in fields such as library and media; would house the Portland Teachers Program, which provides a pathway into a teaching career for people of color; would offer a childcare learning lab; and provide re-training for the thousands of teachers in K-12 schools who need re-licensing on a regular basis.

We’ll keep you posted on how this one’s going.
