House Democratic leader's take on increasing taxes

Photos and Story by

Here’s what Rep. Mary Nolan, chairwoman of the House Democratic Party, has to say about the tax increase which would raise corporate and individual income taxes by more than $730 million over the next two years.

The revenue passed in the House yesterday and is expected to be passed by the Senate soon.

First, a bit of full disclosure: I live in Rep. Nolan’s district. Here is she had to say on the issue:

“Oregon is in crisis. Today (Tuesday) we took the bold steps necessary to defend the middle class, children, seniors and others who are sacrificing daily during this national recession. By doing so, we will also protect jobs, innovation and the educated workforce and stable system of civil laws that help businesses thrive.

“Asking big corporations and wealthy individuals to contribute a little more offers an equitable, long-term way to protect schools, health care, police, firefighters, courts and prisons – the very services that build strong communities that allow businesses to be successful. Our plan accomplishes this without placing additional financial burdens on the middle-class families struggling in this economy and the small businesses that will be the engines of our recovery.

“Just like the rest of the country, Oregon is hurting. And just like Oregon families are doing, we are tightening our belts and making taxpayer dollars go further. The accountability measures we implement this year, along with our sensible revenue and budget package, will ensure that when the history of this legislative session is written it will show that House Democrats led Oregon through the most challenging economic climate in generations.”
