DID YOU KNOW….THAT DUAL HIGH SCHOOL/PCC CLASSES SAVE THOUSANDS?!

Photos and Story by

In the last school year, 262 Newberg High School students earned 2,205 college credits through dual enrollment classes at Portland Community College. Students enrolled in calculus, welding, Shakespeare, Advanced Senior English, horticulture, engineering and robotics classes earned PCC college credit as well as Newberg High School credit toward graduation. And the bottom line? An overall tuition savings of $167,580!

Newberg High School has one of the most robust dual credit programs in the state. Newberg is third in the state in credits earned and the fourth in the number of unduplicated students enrolled in dual credit options.

Over the past year, ties between PCC and the Newberg community have become even stronger. In December 2009, PCC finalized a purchase of nearly 16 acres in Newberg as the eventual site of a new educational facility for residents of Newberg and nearby areas. The groundbreaking on Oct. 13 marked the construction start of the facility, which will be approximately 13,000 square feet, with room to expand in the future. Portland-based Hennebery Eddy Architects has led the design of the center, which will open in fall 2011.

And starting last month, the college began offering both credit and non-credit courses at its interim site, the Chehalem Cultural Center, where it currently serves more than 300 new students.
