North Portland Community works with PCC on Cascade Improvements

The Cascade Campus Bond Advisory Committee held its first meeting on Nov. 30. Gathered in the multipurpose room of Emmanuel Temple on North Sumner Street, the committee expressed hope and enthusiasm about the bond program at Cascade.

The committee’s membership reaches deep into the community – a broad assortment of ethnicities, professions, backgrounds and histories with PCC.

Much of this first organizational meeting was about process rather than specifics. Sharif Abdullah, the meeting’s facilitator, led the group in a discussion about its charter – the role the group will play as the bond program progresses – and guided the group in identifying committee ground rules.

The committee faces an ambitious calendar of meetings, covering a broad range of subjects, including promises made in the passing of the 2008 Bond Measure; background and history of the development of the campus; academic and community visions for the future; land use, transportation and zoning issues;  building placement; and Master Planning.

The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Humboldt Gardens, 5033 N. Vancouver Ave. Members of the public are invited to attend and will be provided an opportunity to ask questions or provide comments to the committee at the beginning of each meeting. The December meeting will be followed by meetings on January 20 and 27.

All told, it was a very positive inaugural meeting, and the committee is looking forward to being part of planning this next phase of expansion for the college and the community where is resides.
