Open House events bring Cascade Campus and Community together

Photos and Story by

More than 200 college students, faculty and staff and business and neighborhood stakeholders took part in six community open houses hosted by PCC on April 19, 20 and 21. Event sites included a neighborhood coffee shop, a local church, the North Portland Library, a community newspaper and the Cascade Campus quad.

Through an innovative, hands-on, 3-D tabletop model, PCC and its design team, THA Architecture Inc., encouraged participants to visualize, create and experiment with various building configurations to integrate Cascade Campus improvements into one of North Portland’s oldest urban neighborhoods and meet the college’s educational mission and growing enrollment. Participants used the model to address campus and community needs with regards to educational programming, proximity of uses, public safety, transportation, parking, on-campus childcare, pedestrian friendly streets, business revitalization, activated storefronts on Killingsworth and campus edges.

PCC hosted the events at different locations, hours of the day and days of the week based on suggestions from community stakeholders the college interviewed in fall 2010. As a result, each location drew a unique combination of people and interests. For example, several local parents who attended the event at the library had insight regarding the orientation and location of the proposed childhood development program and on-campus childcare center, while participants at the Piedmont Church of Christ offered their ideas about how the college could integrate more with the local community.

Looks like Nick is getting good feedback from the CA neighbors. What a great idea to go outside of PCC to reach the community!!

Thanks for checking in on the Bond Web Site. The series of progressive open houses on and off the Cascade Campus brought out neighbors, business and property owners, PCC students, faculty, and staff and increased the number of possible options to 12! Great feedback and input from all.

After I initially commented I clicked the -Notify me when new feedback are added- checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get four emails with the same comment. Is there any method you’ll be able to take away me from that service? Thanks!
