Tuition equity

Photos and Story by

I’m sitting in the hall at the Capitol right now because the overflow room for the actual hearing room is full. Why? Because Oregonians from across the state are here to testify for and against a bill that would provide in-state tuition to the children of undocumented immigrants.
We’re here to testify in support.
Pro or con, there’s something wonderful about a political system that let’s EVERYONE come out to testify. Everyone’s voice counts.
Senate Bill 742 would grant in-state tuition to students entering the university system who have attended school in the United States for at least five years, attended school in Oregon for at least three concurrent years and have graduated from an Oregon high school, regardless of documentation status.
If it passes, Oregon would join Texas, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Washington, New Mexico, Utah, New York, Kansas, California and Illinois.
