Beaverton student tops in Google Science Fair

The Oregonian reported today that Beaverton resident Naomi Shah, 16, of Sunset High School, is one of the top three winners in the international Google Science Fair, receiving a trophy made out of Legos and $25,000 in scholarship money.
Shah won the 15-16 age category in Google’s first science fair for her project, “Air Pollution Impacts Lung Health of Asthma Patients,” and brought home a $25,000 scholarship.
She rose through the global competition from being among 7,500 entries to 60 semi-finalists to 15 finalists.
Shah, a junior at Sunset, has taken college-level physics at Portland Community College, as well as college-level calculus and statistics, according to Oregonian reporter Wendy Owen.
This summer, she’s interning at Oregon Health & Science University, working on how nicotine affects lung cancer. She expects to use her newfound knowledge to expand her asthma project.
