A Portland Community College community service event aims to make this coming holiday season a pleasant one for homebound seniors and residents of community centers.

The campaign kicked off with PCC staff and faculty donating 856 books and cleaning 17 boxes of books during In-Service to benefit disadvantaged kids through the Children’s Book Bank.

The 50th community service pledge kicked off with PCC staff and faculty donating 856 books and cleaning 17 boxes of books during In-Service to benefit disadvantaged kids through the Children’s Book Bank.

During early December, PCC’s Service Learning Program will be hosting a holiday card- and placemat-making drive at each of the college’s main four campuses. The hand-made gifts will be delivered to Loaves & Fishes, which will then distribute them during the December holiday season to seniors and centers throughout the Portland metro area. In addition, staff will be collecting new socks of any kind to be delivered to the same seniors by Loaves & Fishes. Students, staff, faculty and the public are invited to volunteer for this project.

The event is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday, Dec. 5 at the cafeteria, Cascade Campus (705 N. Killingsworth St.); Tuesday, Dec. 6 at the Upper Mall, College Center, Sylvania Campus (12000 S.W. 49th Ave.); Wednesday, Dec. 7, in the Great Hall, Southeast Center (2305 S.E. 82nd Ave.); and Thursday, Dec. 8 in the student lounge, Building 3, Rock Creek Campus (17705 N.W. Springville Road).

To register, visit the Service Learning web page.

The holiday card and placemat drive is part of PCC’s 50th anniversary pledge to reach 50,000 hours of community service this school year.

“I think these events will be a great opportunity to be together and contribute something back to this community that keeps this place going and alive,” said Sarah Tillery, PCC’s Service Learning Program coordinator.
