One of Portland’s biggest powwows set for Jan. 21

Portland Community College’s Annual Traditional Winter Powwow is one of Portland’s largest celebrations of Native American culture and tradition.
Dozens of drum groups will perform along side hundreds of dancers at this year's Winter Powwow at the Sylvania Campus.
On Saturday, Jan. 21, the 13th edition of this community jewel will take place from noon to 9 p.m. in the Health and Technology Building Gymnasium, Sylvania Campus (12000 S.W. 49th Ave.). The first grand entry starts at 1 p.m. and the second at 7 p.m. In addition to drumming and dancing, there will be children activities, a college fair and a community dinner at 5:30 p.m. Admission and parking is free. There will be raffle prizes, Native American crafts and food vendors. American Sign Language will be available.
Bob Tom (Confederated Tribes of Siletz and Grand Ronde) will serve as master of ceremonies, Ed Goodell (Confederated Tribes of Siletz) as whip man, Ed and Vickie Wulf as head dancers, Bulls and Bears and 4 Directions as co-host drums and the Northwest Indian Veterans Association will stand in as color guard.
