Celebrate ‘American Heart Month’ this February with PCC’s ‘Heart Beat’

Photos and Story by

Designated as “American Heart Month” by the American Heart Association, February is a time to celebrate hearts and learn how to gain and maintain heart health.

To support the effort PCC Sylvania is hosting its fourth annual “Heart Beat” health fair from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 15, Upper Mall, College Center Building.

Le Tran, a PCC dental hygiene student, takes the blood pressure of an attendee at last year's “Heart Beat” health fair.

The fair will feature a variety of activities to be hosted by several of PCC’s Allied Health departments, including:

  • Free blood pressure screenings and information about the connection between oral disease and heart disease by the dental department.
  • Images of heart anatomy from the medical imaging department.
  • Testing in body mass index; Par Q form; Waist-Hip ratio; a step test; proper equipment usage and CPR demos by the fitness technology department.
  • Information about cardiac rehabilitation and how to live with heart disease from the nursing department.
  • The latest information about healthy and not-so-healthy fats and the caffeine content of energy drinks from the nutrition department.
  • Handouts about childhood obesity and tips to encourage healthy eating habits among children, from early education family studies and the child development center.
  • Heart healthy tips for “baby boomers,” led by the gerontology department.

The event is free of charge and open to the public, all faculty, staff and students. Parking is $5. For more information, call Kate Chester, Community Relations manager at PCC Sylvania, at (971) 722-8233.
