PCC ranks in top-100 in eight national lists for degrees

PCC ranks favorably in the new community college degree rankings.
Portland Community College was ranked in eight national lists detailing the top-100 community colleges and four-year schools offering various kinds of associate’s degrees. The report also broke down how many degrees were earned by specific ethnic groups.
The list is compiled every summer from U.S. Department of Education data and released by Community College Week. The data was collected from the 2010-11 academic year and is compared to the 2009-10 year. This year, PCC ranked No. 25 in total number of associate’s degrees offered and is No. 13 among community colleges. In addition, the college was ranked 15th in all disciplines for non-minority students (growth of 15 percent from previous year) and 94th for minorities earning degrees (16 percent). For Asian Americans earning associate’s degrees, PCC ranked No. 33 and No. 69 for American Indians (27 percent growth).
The college also ranked 18th in the number of arts and sciences, general students and humanities degrees awarded. PCC earned spot No. 45 for the number of computer and information sciences and support services degrees and No. 46 for degrees in parks, recreation, leisure and fitness studies, which grew by 200 percent at the college.

Are you serious?
This short article highlights that the college ranked in the top 100 for several categories (according to number of associate’s degrees). The numbers for Latinos and Africann Americans students weren’t included because PCC simply wasn’t in the top 100 and didn’t make those lists. Sure, it shows that the college has room for improvement – but, how does it make the author of this article racist?

Angela, the stats come from Community College Week. I was merely relaying where we ranked highly and because we didn’t make the lists I have no idea where certain groups are ranked. But clearly this is an issue for you, so you might want to contact the author of the report – Community College Week.
