Groundbreaking at PCC Southeast Center gives community reason to celebrate

Close to 300 people took part in the Community Fall Fest at PCC Southeast Center yesterday (October 30, 2012) to welcome the new campus president Jessica Howard and celebrate the ground breaking for two new buildings at Southeast Center. Thanks to the bond approved by voters in 2008, PCC has been able to expand its campuses and centers to increase and improve educational opportunities for people across the college’s five-county district.
At the festive event, PCC students, faculty and staff rubbed shoulders with federal and state elected officials and people from the neighborhood, business community and local public schools and organizations under the shelter of a large white tent set up in the campus parking lot and construction site. The fun and lively event was a warm and welcomed reprieve on an otherwise rainy day — drawing people in to enjoy live music; food, ice cream and drinks prepared by local vendors; Chinese dance and martial arts performances; artwork by students from Alder Elementary and Harrison Park schools; mask making, face painting, balloon twisting and a ground-breaking celebration.
Currently Southeast Center covers just over 10 acres, with two buildings encompassing approximately 91,000 square feet. Upon completion of this expansion, the center will grow to 18 acres, with a total of six buildings, more than doubling in size to 200,000 square feet. This will translate into more academic opportunities for people taking classes (credit and non credit) at Southeast Center.
