PCC partners with Car2Go to assist with transportation, sustainability

Photos and Story by

Portland Community College is on the Car2go.

The college has partnered with the company Car2go to assist with PCC reaching Climate Action Plan and Transportation Demand Management goals. Students, faculty, and staff who do not commute via single occupant vehicle can use Car2go to run errands, to get someplace in case of emergency, or to go to a meeting. There is a Car2go vehicle parked in a designated parking space on the Sylvania, Cascade, and Southeast Center locations. Vehicles do not have to be returned to their place of origin.

PCC will host Car2go promo events with company marketing representatives to answer questions or sign people up for the service. The $35 registration fee will be waived at the events. Everyone who registers can spin the wheel of chance to rack up some free Car2go minutes into their account. If anyone drives a car2go car to a PCC campus, they can park it onsite for free. Booking and managing trips happens all online and users can use a smart phone to track where available cars are on the campuses.

For more information about Car2go, visit the company’s website.

Car2go representative visits are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day:

Southeast Center – Tuesday-Wednesday, Jan. 8-9. Great Hall.

Cascade Campus – Tuesday, Wednesday, Jan. 15-16. Student Center Building.

Sylvania Campus – Tuesday through Thursday, Jan. 22-24, Upper Mall, College Center Building.

Rates include:

  • One time sign up fee: $35 plus tax (waived at events).
  • Per minute: 38 cents, plus tax.
  • Per hour maximum: $13.99, plus tax.
  • Per day maximum: $72.99, plus tax.
  • Per mile after 150 miles per trip: 45 cents, plus tax.

During the formation of PCC’s Climate Action Plan back in 2007, the Transportation Subcommittee was formed to address those issues relating to emissions caused from commuting and transportation. The Parking & Transportation Department at PCC has been involved in Transportation Demand Management planning and implementation beginning in 1992. TDM encompasses the goals and strategies implemented by a department or organization to change travel behavior. The first TDM plan, developed in 1992, created a solid foundation that the department has continued to build on over the last 19 years.

This is an exciting new development, and one I’ve been hoping for ever since ZipCar arrived in Portland.
It will be even better when Car2Go expands into Washington County and out to Rock Creek. I know it’s a new company — I hope it is aware of the demand and interest for such services in places like Beaverton and Tigard. I encourage PCC to do all it can to support Car2Go in any efforts to expand westward and south to serve students, faculty and staff who live and work on the west side of PCC’s district.
