Free tickets available for Linus Pauling Science lecture

Photos and Story by

PCC is offering free tickets to students who want to attend the Linus Pauling Memorial Science and Technology Lecture Series featuring Dr. James Shapiro of the University Chicago. He will present at 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 8 at the First Congregational Church, 1126 SW Park.

The lecture, “DNA and the New Theory of Evolution” argues that Charles Darwin wasn’t quite right when he said that genetic mutations occurred randomly. Dr. Shapiro says that DNA is ‘designed’ to change in order to adapt to environmental pressures. Students can pick up one ticket at the checkout desk of any PCC library (and the Newberg information desk).

Oregon’s Linus Pauling Memorial Lecture Series explores the latest discoveries altering people’s understanding of the universe and how it relates to humans. Season Tickets for this event are available at (503) 232-2300.

I really like that PCC is ofering this to us for free. I wish we had a stronger lecture base here at PCC to help encourage more kids into more chalanging degree progams in science.

I would encourage anyone considering attending this to look into professional criticism of Dr. Shapiro’s ideas.

Regardless of professional criticism, it is healthy to keep an open mind – remember part of good research is maintaining skepticism – of our own ideas and others… Never assume the absolute truth has been found. Not to mention, there are countless ideas that changed history and THEY were criticized and some great thinkers lost their lives for their ideas… Galileo ring a bell… ;) Just saying.

You said it Gannon. I second that. Moreover, I think PCC should redirect all of its’ resources from pushing “cultural diversity” propaganda, over to pushing scientific agendas. And then if all colleges followed suit, three things would happen:
1. Our country would not have to IMPORT 100,000 foreign Engineers/Scientists under the H1B visa program EVERY YEAR (that’s right kids, 100,000 of your American jobs are being stolen from you annually and there’s no end in sight)
2. More American Engineers/Scientists would have a chance to get back to work
3. Our country would climb out of the economic recession. Well a free lecture is a step in the right direction.
