Photos and Story by

Brazilian flare is coming to Portland Community College’s Rock Creek Campus in April.

The campus’ Performing Arts Department is hosting the Brazilian virtuoso jazz/choro group Trio Brasileiro at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 28, in The Forum Theater (Room 114), Building 3, Rock Creek Campus (17705 NW Springville Road). Tickets are $10 at the door (cash or check only) for the general public. Admission is free for PCC students and staff with ID.

Formed in 2011, Trio Brasileiro has made a name for itself as an ensemble worthy of international attention. Left to right, Trio Brasileiro includes Dudu Maia, Douglas Lora and Alexandre Lora.

Earlier in the day, a workshop with PCC music staff and the trio is set for noon, also in The Forum Theater. The workshop is free and open to the public. It will demonstrate styles and rhythms of Brazilian music, show the roles of each instrument in the texture of the music, and showcase the history of choro.

Parking for both events is free in the event parking area behind Building 9.

“This is a rare opportunity to hear musicians of international stature right in our own backyard,” said Pamela Beaty, PCC music instructor. “These master musicians perform choro, a style of Brazilian music featuring samba rhythms, beautiful melodies and lightning fast tempos layered over jazzy harmonies.”

Formed in 2011, Trio Brasileiro has made a name for itself as an ensemble worthy of international attention. It includes guitarist and full-time member of the award-winning Brazil Guitar Duo, Douglas Lora; one of Brazil’s top mandolin virtuosos, Dudu Maia; and percussionist and brother of Douglas, Alexandre Lora. The group plays their own compositions and those of Jacob do Bandolim, Ernesto Nazareth and others. Trio Brasileiro released their first recording, “Simples Assim,” in 2012.

“Their stunning virtuosity is matched with remarkable musicianship and a deep devotion to the language of music,” Beaty added.

This concert is intended to raise awareness about the Rock Creek Music Program. The campus offers music classes to all musicians from all performance levels. For more information, contact faculty chair Jason Palmer at jason.palmer@pcc.edu, or connect on Facebook at www.facebook.com/pccrcmp.

Is there any RSVP required for the noon workshop, or is it first-come first-seated, up to the limit of the auditorium?

Hi Jim, seating is first-come, first-seated and will be held in room 114, Building 3 on the Rock Creek Campus. Please be sure to park in event parking behind building 9 (we’ll have signs directing you).
