Earth Week work party spruces up Rock Creek’s Learning Garden

Photos and Story by

This party was certainly a lot of work. And that’s how everyone likes it.

Organizers in charge of the Rock Creek Campus Learning Garden hosted its annual Earth Week work party on Friday, April 24. Nearly 50 volunteers braved wet and windy weather throughout the day to plant seeds, vegetables, vines, and plow rows for future plantings. Also, Building Construction Technology students constructed a cob structure that will serve as an information center for the garden. The Learning Garden, located across the entry road from Building 9, provides a nutrient-rich environment for organic gardening, permaculture, science, health education, landscape technology, building construction technology and art classes, ecology lectures, health and nutrition, and community-based learning for partner local high schools. It produces roughly 3,500 pounds of food from 3.5 acres of trees and garden beds. Interested in helping out the remainder of spring term? The Rock Creek Learning Garden has a weekly volunteer schedule for anyone wanting to assist in the garden’s development.
