Physics, engineering high school teachers attend PCC equity and inclusion workshop

Photos and Story by

A group of 19 physics and engineering high school teachers visited the Sylvania Campus in early February for a Physics Equity and Inclusion Workshop. Funded by the South Metro Salem Stem Hub with a grant from NW Education, the teachers were taught teaching tactics to retain underserved populations.

The workshop kicked off with participants taking the Harvard Implicit Bias Test on Gender in Science to set a foundation for the day and find out what the group’s unconscious biases were. Participants discussed specific teaching techniques to increase equity and inclusion in their classrooms, followed by a guided reflection and plans to convene again in the future about their progress. The high school teachers also toured PCC’s MakerLab and learned about the interdisciplinary programming that takes place in the space.
