PCC Online Class Helps Busy Parents Solve Discipline Problems

Photos and Story by

PORTLAND, Ore. – Parents don’t need to punish children to make them behave. That’s the message Dr. James Thompson will explain in a non-credit, online class through PCC Community Education this summer entitled Solving Discipline Problems at Home. Thompson has written and presented distance-learning courses, workbooks and videotapes for educators on the art of student discipline. Parents will learn specific techniques used by teachers to implement a discipline plan that teaches children the rewards of responsible behavior. Included in a dozen lesson topics will be "What to do When,""You Need a Plan,""Problems at School,"and "We’ll Try Again Tomorrow."Thompson will provide two lessons each week, which students can manage on their own schedule for up to eight weeks after the class has started. Students learn and participate at their own pace, working on a first-name basis with the instructor and each other in online discussion areas."As a single parent whose evenings are promised to my teenager, online courses relieve the stress of racing for classes, looking for parking and wondering what he’s up to while I’m gone,"said Leslie Longstreet, a PCC online student.Students can register for the course by visiting www.ourcoursescome2u.com. The course will be held three times this summer: Wednesday, June 12 through Friday, July 19; Wednesday, July 10 through Friday, August 16; and Wednesday, August 14 through Friday, September 20. Students can open the lessons any time for the duration of the course. Cost is $69.For more information, call PCC Community Education at 503-731-6619.
