PCC's Sumner Honored With Crystal Award

PORTLAND, Ore. – The 11th Annual Crystal Awards presented Ron Sumner, Portland Community College’s assistant director of its Foundation, with a lifetime achievement award at the 11th Annual Crystal Awards.He received the Barbara Stallcup Miller Professional Achievement Award at a reception in the Convention Center on Nov. 5. The Willamette Valley Development Officers (WVDO) hosted the awards ceremony, which serves people raising funds for nonprofit organizations by linking them with others in the development community.Sumner, a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) and a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, has more than 40 years of experience in a variety of roles with nonprofits and a wide range of fund development programs. His background includes 21 years with the Boys Scouts of America, 10 years with the Multiple Sclerosis Society and more than eight years as director of development for the Volunteers of America. He is also a member of the WVDO and the Northwest Planned Giving Roundtable. He lives in southeast Portland.Barbara Stallcup Miller presented her namesake award to Sumner, who received a standing ovation from 300 guests. "For 40 years, he has carried the banner for helping build a better community,"Miller said. She also noted that Ron had served on "countless committees, mentored countless individuals. We are indebted to his compassion and his commitment."Sumner, upon accepting the lifetime achievement award, told the WVDO audience, "Don’t be afraid to set big goals and strive for them."Also key, he said, was to work with volunteers, take advantage of mentoring programs and to also give back, and have fun.
