PCC to host ring, banner ceremony for title-winning basketball team
Photos and Story by James Hill
Last season, the Portland Community College men’s basketball team (the Panthers) won its first-ever Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) championship. Now it’s time to honor the team.
PCC is hosting a ring and banner-raising ceremony just before its home scrimmage versus Centralia Community College at the Cascade Campus gymnasium, 705 N. Killingsworth St. The ceremony will start at 6:30 p.m. with tip-off at 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 17.
Players and coaches will be presented NWAACC championship rings and a special title banner will be raised to the gym’s rafters. On hand to celebrate this achievement with the players and coaching staff will be NWAACC Executive Commissioner Marco Azurdia, PCC President Jeremy Brown and Cascade Campus President Karin Edwards. The NWACC is the Northwest’s athletic conference for community colleges and PCC has never won a title in the conference until last season.
The journey to the championship was a special one. The team won just one game between 2010-12 until the college hired Tony Broadous as head coach. Last year, the Panthers went 23-9 and 10-4 in their league before storming through the league tournament playoffs to capture the NWAACC title.
